2017-2018 APPLICATIONS
2017-2018 Positions
PRInt WRITER
We are looking for articles that deal with some intersection of science and society. As with any good paper, your article should not be simply a review of recent events or research; you need a thesis with an argument—a "so what." What are the implications for society? law? policy? future research? We look for a wide range of articles, dealing with novel scientific research, law, and public policy. All articles we publish must be supported by supporting sources from academic or scientific journals. You don't have to consider yourself a scientist to submit an idea! If you have an idea that you think would be a good fit for the journal, send it in.
Staff writers will be responsible for writing one or two 600 - 800 word articles per semester. Feature writers will be responsible for writing one 1,000 - 1,500 word article per semester. All writers will also have to take part in bi-monthly meetings and help with magazine distribution activities. Both Staff and Feature writers also have the opportunity to publish shorter articles on the Triple Helix blog.

ASSOCIATE EDITOR
Associate Editors work closely with one to two writers over the course of the cycle, providing feedback during each of the three rounds of editing. Edits focus on argument, structure, grammar and flow. Associate Editors are not explicitly responsible for fact-checking, but definitely look for lapses in logic and validity of sources. Associate Editors are expected to attend our bi-monthly meetings, during which they meet face-to-face with their writers to work on articles and answer questions. Associate Editors are expected to maintain electronic communication with their writers outside of these meetings, and are definitely encouraged to try to meet with their writers one-on-one informally.
As part of the application process, those interested in becoming an associate editor must edit the following article using the "track" feature on Microsoft Word: ae_editing_assessment.docx
Email the edited version of this article to [email protected].

BLOG WRITER
Blog writers will be responsible for writing 400 - 800 word blog style articles to be published every other week. Blog articles can cover similar topics to our print magazine or interviews with Brown science professors and researchers.
Blog editor
The blog editors work with the blog writers to prepare their blog articles for posting. Editors are not responsible for fact-checking but play an integral role in guiding piece organization and asking for clarification of content. Given the fast turn-over involved with web publication, blog editors generally edit for one cycle's worth of review. A enthusiasm for multiple fields in science and society is helpful.
Artist / Layout Designer
We are Brown and RISD students who are interested in exploring modes of visually representing the intersections of science, technology and society. We combine our skills in InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and traditional art media to publish the semesterly Triple Helix magazine.
We work in pairs composed of one layout designer and one artist. Over the semester, each pair is responsible for two to four spreads. They will formulate the concept, create the visuals, work with writers to design infographics, and finally piece together the components into the final product. Layout designers are expected to have some familiarity with InDesign; additional experience in Illustrator, Photoshop, or any relevant software is a plus. Artists often work in traditional media such as pencil, watercolor, ink or pastel, but may also create digital works.
